Asal Usul Penjor di Bali


Penjor merupakan lambang Pertiwi dengan segala hasilnya, yang memberikan kehidupan dan keselamatan. Pertiwi atau tanah digambarkan sebagai dua ekor naga yaitu Naga Basuki dan Ananta bhoga. Selain itu juga, penjor merupakan simbol gunung, yang memberikan keselamatan dan kesejahteraan

Hiasan-hiasan adalah merupakan bejenis-jenis daun seperti daun cemara, andong, paku pipid, pakis aji dll. Untuk buah-buahan mempergunakan padi, jagung, kelapa, ketela, pisang termasuk pala bungkah, pala wija dan pala gantung, serta dilengkapi dengan jajan, tebu dan uang.

Demikian pengertian dan hiasan yang digunakan dalam kutipan artikel Penjor dalamParisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (ref).
 
Dalam kutipan tersebut juga dijelaskan bahwa, Tujuan pemasangan penjor adalah sebagai swadharma umat Hindu untuk mewujudkan rasa bakti dan berterima kasih kehadapan Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. Penjor juga sebagai tanda terima kasih manusia atas kemakmuran yang dilimpahkan Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. Bambu tinggi melengkung adalah gambaran dari gunung yang tertinggi sebagai tempat yang suci. Hiasan yang terdiri dari kelapa, pisang, tebu, padi, jajan dan kain adalah merupakan wakil-wakil dari seluruh tumbuh-tumbuhan dan benda sandang pangan yang dikarunia oleh Hyang Widhi Wasa.

Umat Hindu di Bali pada saat hari raya Galungan pada umumnya membuat penjor. Penjor Galungan ditancapkan pada Hari Selasa / Dina Anggara wara / wuku Dungulan yang dikenal sebagai hari Penampahan Galungan yang bermakna tegaknya dharma (kebaikan). 

Penjor Galungan dipasang atau ditancapkan pada lebuh di depan sebelah kanan pintu masuk pekarangan. Bila rumah menghadap ke utara maka penjor ditancapkan pada sebelah timur pintu masuk pekarangan. Sanggah dan lengkungan ujung penjor menghadap ke tengah jalan. Bahan penjor adalah sebatang bambu yang ujungnya melengkung, dihiasi dengan janur/daun enau yang muda serta daun-daunan lainnya (plawa). 

Perlengkapan penjor Pala bungkah (umbi-umbian seperti ketela rambat), Pala Gantung (misalnya kelapa, mentimun, pisang, nanas dll), Pala Wija (seperti jagung, padi dll), jajan, serta sanggah Ardha Candra lengkap dengan sesajennya. Pada ujung penjor digantungkan sampiyan penjor lengkap dengan porosan dan bunga. Sanggah Penjor Galungan mempergunakan Sanggah Cucuk, sebagai lambang Hyang Ardha Candra yang dibuat dari bambu, dengan bentuk dasar persegi empat dan atapnya melengkung setengah lingkaran sehingga bentuknya menyerupai bentuk bulan sabit.

Unsur-unsur penjor tersebut adalah merupakan symbol-simbol suci, sebagai landasan peng-aplikasian ajaran Weda, sehingga mencerminkan adanya nilai-nilai etika Agama. Unsur-unsur pada penjor merupakan simbol-simbol sebagai berikut:
  • Kain putih, yang terdapat pada penjor sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Iswara.
  • Bambu, sebagai simbol dan kekuatan Hyang Brahma.
  • Kelapa, sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Rudra.
  • Janur, sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Mahadewa
  • Daun-daunan (plawa), sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Sangkara.
  • Pala bungkah, pala gantung sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Wisnu.
  • Tebu, sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Sambu.
  • Sanggah Ardha Candra, sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Siwa.
  • Upakara sebagai simbol kekuatan Hyang Sadha Siwa dan Parama Siwa.
